Check Up: December 10, 2006

December 10, 2006

This week from December 3 to December 9, 2006 I have written approximately 4,120 words on Magic Pens (not including the original peice of The Lady or the Tiger which I just copy and pasted.) I also wrote about 4,000 words not on Magic Pens (roleplays) for a complete total of 8,120 words. For reading, I didn’t do as well, (I never do,) as I read one chapter of The Little White Horse written by Elizabeth Goudge and I read The Lady or the Tiger written by Frank R. Stockton about three times.

Oh, I forgot! I also read The Adventures of the Speckled Band written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The Lady or the Tiger: My Ending

December 8, 2006

For English class, we were assigned to read the short story, The Lady or the Tiger written by Frank R. Stockton, which is an open-ended story. We were assigned to write our own ending, so here is mine. I tried to write it the way that the original author did. The italicized words make up the original piece written by Frank R. Stockton.

In the very olden time there lived a semi-barbaric king, whose ideas, though somewhat polished and sharpened by the progressiveness of distant Latin neighbors, were still large, florid, and untrammeled, as became the half of him which was barbaric. He was a man of exuberant fancy, and, withal, of an authority so irresistible that, at his will, he turned his varied fancies into facts. He was greatly given to self-communing, and, when he and himself agreed upon anything, the thing was done. When every member of his domestic and political systems moved smoothly in its appointed course, his nature was bland and genial; but, whenever there was a little hitch, and some of his orbs got out of their orbits, he was blander and more genial still, for nothing pleased him so much as to make the crooked straight and crush down uneven places.Among the borrowed notions by which his barbarism had become semified was that of the public arena, in which, by exhibitions of manly and beastly valor, the minds of his subjects were refined and cultured. But even here the exuberant and barbaric fancy asserted itself. The arena of the king was built, not to give the people an opportunity of hearing the rhapsodies of dying gladiators, nor to enable them to view the inevitable conclusion of a conflict between religious opinions and hungry jaws, but for purposes far better adapted to widen and develop the mental energies of the people. This vast amphitheater, with its encircling galleries, its mysterious vaults, and its unseen passages, was an agent of poetic justice, in which crime was punished, or virtue rewarded, by the decrees of an impartial and incorruptible chance.

Variations for the T-Shirt Logo

December 7, 2006

We held a vote at our meeting and have chosen a white hoodie. If 30 or more of us buy one, the price will be cheaper, so pre-pay for yours before the Christmas Break! Matt’s ThermoNuclear Warhead idea will be located on the front in a pocket size, and my outline for the scroll and dragon idea will be located on the back in a large size.

Since many people have complained about my idea’s clutter, I have created some different variations. One variation has the items displayed around the sides of the scroll along with the top to reduce the clutter, and the other has the objects a little behind the scroll. The first picture is just a touch-up of the original. Please tell me what you think of them!

The Horse From the Woods: Chapter 1 Part 4/4

December 4, 2006

Natalie’s breaths came in gasps as she ran with all of the strength in her past the first trees of the forest. Ignoring the branches that scratched at her face, she continued on with cuts along her cheeks and arms. Blood slowly crept from her small wounds, yet she was determined to find her horse. She must find them, before the dragons did. Unaware of her surroundings as she ran blinded by shear determination, she found herself falling as her foot was caught on an ugly, moss-covered log. She sprawled over the small log before her, and hit her head on a flat stone. Her world began to spin and fade just before it all went black…

The Horse From the Woods: Chapter 1 Part 3/4

December 3, 2006

Natalie grasped her horse’s neck tightly as she took in the horrific scene around her. Duchess became uneasy and broke free of her owner’s embrace to neigh loudly as she rose onto her back legs. She kicked her strong, front legs wildly as Natalie tried to regain control over her horse. Keeping her distance, she felt the fear within the atmosphere and could sense Duchess was troubled. She could see the deep fear within her sparkling blue eyes. “Duchess, what is it? What is it, girl?” she cried out reaching for the reigns that were whipping around wildly. Duchess quickly turned and bolted down the dirty, cobblestone path out of the destroyed village leaving Natalie to run after the mare. She was unable to keep up with Duchess’s incredible speed as she yelled out in despair with her arms outstretched, “Wait, Duchess! Come back! Where are you going? What is wrong?”

Election

December 3, 2006

From a few people asking me to run, I have decided that I shall. Thanks Mr. Gifford for persuading me. :)

I think that I would make an excellent choice for a Magic Pens officer as I am on Magic Pens every day and have attended every meeting so far. I check everybody’s blogs everyday and I try to read as many of everybody’s stories that I can. Everytime I read a story, I also comment on it giving tips, errors I have found, and my favorites, etc. I have recruited a new member, and I speak with members that have not posted at all or for a while in person to remind them that their blog still exists. With a Blogline account set up, I am aware of the second that a new post is put out which would help me to read them as soon as possible. As a writer on Magic Pens, I try to keep up with our goals and I write almost every day. I have posted many posts, and I try to post at least two to three every week. I have drawn many different T-Shirt Logo ideas, and have looked at all of the other ideas for our hoodies. I will write a review of every meeting I attend for those who did not attend, and I will help people change the appearance of their blog.

Our World: It Came to Me in a Dream – Chapter 2

December 2, 2006

“Petra! Papa, Petra is the place that we are to travel to! We must leave now!” I argued. “He came to me once more. The angel sent by God appeared in my dream again last night. I saw him and he spoke to me like the last time. We must leave. We must!”

“Is this the truth my Namir?” he asked me, not convinced by what I had spoken of already.

Our World: It Came to Me in a Dream – Chapter 1

December 1, 2006

First off, I will have to explain “Our World” to anybody who does not know what that is here… I am in a writing club at my school called Magic Pens and we write stories on on-line blogs like this one. (This one is not my Magic Pens blog.) Together, we decided to create a fictional world with a fictional world history and we would all write different stories within the same ficitonal world. What we came up with, was Earth many years in the future, being taken over by aliens called Qurks, (pronounced: kerk.) These aliens have destroyed much of our world and have been enslaving humans to mine for copper as it is a rare mineral where they come from. As they invaded Earth, they opened portals and such that allow mythical beasts, undead, vampires, etc. to come to Earth. Now the little human race that is left is trying to survive… That’s Our World in a few sentences. I tried to research as much as I could for this story, so if you find a mistake, please tell me. Thanks!

It came to me in a dream, as its magnificent glory stunned me. Why had this marvelous being chosen me? I was of no importance. I was just a poor young man of about ten and seven living with my mother and father in the small village of Ibleen. My family had been one of the lucky few that had survived the first few attacks from the invading Qurks. They had come before, stealing people to mine for copper and leaving us to wait for our chosen date in fear. The life had been drained from my village and the small roads lay still and quiet. We sat waiting, unsure of what to do or where to go. There was nowhere for us to go. Ibleen is located near a small oasis out in the Jordan Desert, and there is no civilization or water for miles around. We were trapped there to wait for the end…
